Mogadishu (HOL) —  France has urged the international community to back Somalia in its ongoing battle against terrorism, emphasizing the country's critical juncture. In a United Nations Security Council address, Deputy Permanent Representative of France Nathalie Broadhurst stressed the need for coordinated global efforts as Somalia transitions from international peacekeeping missions.

"Somalia is at a turning point," Broadhurst stated. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is set to complete its withdrawal by December 31, and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) will also conclude its operations. Broadhurst commended the Somali government and the African Union for their strategic planning and called for an orderly transition of responsibilities.

France's representative stressed the necessity of a coordinated international response, pointing to the European Union's commitment of over 4.3 billion euros to Somalia since 2009. She urged Somalia's partners to support the nation's efforts to contain the Al-Shabab threat and emphasized the importance of defining clear objectives and an exit strategy for future missions.

"Only a coordinated response from Somalia's partners will effectively support Mogadishu's efforts to contain the Al-Shabab threat," Broadhurst said, adding that France is ready to collaborate with the UN, AU, EU, and other stakeholders to ensure effective support for Somalia.
