Former Somali Spokesman refutes defense minister's accusation over cemetery land use

Thursday June 13, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Former Somali Presidential Palace Spokesman Abdirashid Mohamed Hashi has denied the Minister of Defense’s accusation that former President Farmajo's government planned to repurpose the School Policia cemetery into commercial hotels.

Hashi, now the spokesman for former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, stated that the minister's claim is an attempt to legitimize the current government's plan to take over the cemetery land for a business venture, calling it a scam against public property.

"The government's announcement last night was not based on the truth. It is true that Hassan Sheikh's government has become known for tribalism, corruption, and lies," said Hashi.

He emphasized that President Farmajo's administration had fully handed over the public interest land to the current government.

In an interview with Universal TV this week, Defense Minister Abdiqadir Mohamed Nur claimed that the previous administration under President Farmajo had plans to construct a commercial hotel on the cemetery land. However, Somali Sheikhs opposed the plan, arguing that it is forbidden to use cemetery land for private commercial purposes.
The Federal Government's directive has sparked widespread conversation and concern among the Somali people. The decision is part of a larger plan to repurpose the land for a Somali Navy command center, as the search for graves of relatives buried years ago continues into its third day
