Somalia seeks first win against Botswana in World Cup qualifiers

Sunday June 9, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia will face Botswana in an important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Monday, June 10, at Estádio do Zimpeto in Maputo, Mozambique. After a series of disappointing results, the Ocean Stars aim to secure their first win in Group G.

Due to security concerns and inadequate stadium infrastructure, Somalia has been playing its 'home' games in neighbouring Mozambique. Their campaign has been challenging, with losses against Algeria, Uganda, and Mozambique leaving them at the bottom of the group standings.

The Ocean Stars' most recent match saw them fall 2-1 to Mozambique, with Ismael Shirwa scoring a consolation goal. This defeat extended Somalia's winless streak to 14 games, highlighting the team's struggle to find form.

Somalia's head coach is pinning his hopes on Shirwa to inspire his teammates to a potential surprise victory. The return of Abdirizak Mohamed, who missed the last game due to suspension, is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the squad.

Botswana, known as the Zebras, are also coming off a narrow 1-0 loss to Uganda. They currently sit fifth in the group with three points, secured from a win against Guinea. Given the team's recent scoring drought, Botswana's coach, Didier Gomes Da Rosa, might consider changes in the attack.

Monday's match will be the first-ever meeting between Somalia and Botswana, adding an element of unpredictability to the match. Botswana's Kabelo Seakanyeng, who scored the decisive goal against Guinea, will be key to their offensive efforts. Both teams have had a challenging journey in the group stage, with Somalia struggling to secure a win and Botswana facing a scoring drought. This match could be a turning point for both teams.

Both teams are eager to turn their fortunes around and keep their World Cup hopes alive. Kick-off is at 15:00 CAT.

Possible Lineups:

Somalia: Jama; Elmi, Ahmed, Suleiman, Mohamed; Shirwa, Gigli, Abdullahi; Ali, Abatari, Awad.

Botswana: Phoko; Sikele, Kopelang, Ditlhokwe, Mangolo; Mohutsiwa, Gaolaolwe; Orebonye, Baruti, Seakanyeng; Sesinyi.
