Mogadishu (HOL) — Al-Shabaab faced a major defeat in a battle they launched Saturday morning in the Eeldheer district of the Galgaduud region, according to former National Security and Intelligence Agency (NISA) commander and federal MP Yasin Faray.

Faray reported that Al-Shabaab attacked the district from two directions but was unable to breach the government forces' and supporters' defences positioned on the outskirts of Eeldheer. "In a battle that lasted about four hours, Al-Shabaab retreated, suffering heavy losses," said Faray.

The Somali government announced on Saturday that its soldiers, backed by local clan militias, killed about 47 al-Shabab militants and wounded dozens more in a foiled terror attack on a military base in central Somalia.

Galmudug administration's Security Minister, Mohamed Adan Gabobe, confirmed that they had prior information about the Al-Shabaab attack and emphasized that the army was well-prepared and successfully resisted the assault. "They were prepared, on defence, and repelled the attack. The losses Al-Shabaab intended to inflict were instead inflicted upon them. We regained control of 20 kilometres of territory," stated Gabobe.

Somalia's government said five of its soldiers died in a battle. However, Al-Shabaab, which claimed responsibility for the attack, has released photos showing burnt vehicles and the bodies of several soldiers, claiming these were from their attack on the military base in the Eeldheer district.
