Hargeisa (HOL) -The government of the breakaway Republic of Somaliland issued a statement on Friday asserting its right to defend its territorial integrity following strong criticism from the US Embassy in Somalia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it implemented several measures to de-escalate the conflict, including withdrawing security forces from Las Anod and declaring a unilateral ceasefire. The statement added, "The Republic of Somaliland has the right to defend its territorial integrity, and our Armed Forces have been doing so with restraint and professionalism."

However, the statement noted that armed groups, including Al-Shabaab militants, Puntland Security Forces, and members of the Somali National Army, are responsible for inciting the conflict. These groups have rejected peace efforts and continued to engage in violence, misinformation, and destabilization of the region.

Somaliland revealed they had sought assistance from the United States in urging Puntland authorities to halt the flow of fighters and arms into Las Anod, adding that their requests have so far gone unanswered.

Somaliland called on the United States, the African Union, and the international community to collaborate to restore security in Las Anod and support a lasting solution that recognizes Somaliland's sovereignty.

The Ministry's remarks followed a firmly-worded US State Department statement urging Somaliland to pull back its security forces and establish a clear timeline for completing the national elections.

The US said it is prepared to use visa restrictions against those "undermining democracy" in the region.
