Somali military unit departs Mogadishu for Middle Shabelle and Mudug regions

    Mogadishu (HOL) - A sizable contingent of government soldiers headed out of Mogadishu for the Middle Shabelle and Mudug regions on Sunday to join the military offensive in the area.

    According to military officials, troops arrived in the Middle Shabelle region on Sunday night to launch a new offensive in several parts of the area to flush out the al-Qaeda-affiliated group al Shabab.

    They are the second major army unit to depart from Mogadishu and join the operation this month. The first contingent of troops left Mogadishu at the beginning of this month for the Middle Shabelle region's Adale district, though the army has not yet engaged al-Shabab in combat.

    Local officials, including Hiiraan region governor Ali Jeyte Osman, led community forces that fought alongside Somali government forces, capturing dozens of villages from the militant group.

    The army convoy was accompanied by members of both houses of the federal parliament from the Middle Shabelle region constituency as they travelled from Mogadishu to show moral support for the army in the Middle Shabelle and Mudug regions.

    Somali government forces, backed by the local pro-government militias, have intensified their offensive against al Shabab in several parts of the country, killing hundreds of militants in the latest operations.
