Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali National Forces have carried out a planned operation against Al-Shabaab in Jicibow, approximately 30 km north of Buulaburte, where Al-Shabaab has been based in recent times.
According to residents, heavy fighting between forces and militants occurred in Jicibow, with both sides using a variety of weapons.
Military sources told state-owned media that the army succeeded in dispersing the al-Shabaab fighters who were mobilizing the area to carry out attacks in the Hiiraan region.
"The army and the local people are cooperating in the ongoing operation to capture the remnants of the enemy," the government's official media reported, according to various security sources.
The military official did not provide additional information about the operation's casualties.
Somalia's armed forces, backed by local militias and international allies, wage an aggressive counteroffensive against the al-Qaida affiliate, killing hundreds of militants and recapturing more than 40 villages in the rural areas.
