Somali military kills 17 Al-Shabaab militants amid latest offensive

Friday August 19, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali National Army (SNA) said 17 Al-Shabaab militants were killed on Thursday during military operations in central Somalia.

According to the military's public radio broadcast, soldiers intensified operations against the extremist group and captured El-Halelay, Qasaalay, Nurfanax, and Buur Gabo in the Halgan district of Somalia's central Hiran region.

SNA has increased security operations against Al-Shabaab in recent months with some assistance from ATMIS and US airstrikes.

Earlier this week, 14Al-Shabaab militants were killed during operations near Mahas district in central Somalia. The group's regional leader, Mohamed Wehliye Wasuge, was among those killed.

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed on Wednesday that they struck Al-Shabaab positions near Teedaan, Somalia, killing another 13 Al-Shabaab fighters and enabling SNA fighters to capture the militant group's regional stronghold.

In early August, the US carried out three separate airstrikes against the Al Qaeda-linked military group. Four members of Al-Shabaab were killed in those strikes.

Al-Shabab, which still controls territory in rural southern and central Somalia, has been waging a deadly insurgency against Somalia's internationally-backed government since being ousted from Somalia's capital and other major urban centers after a year-long offensive in 2011.
