AU, UN compounds in Mogadishu hit by mortar shells

Sunday April 26, 2020

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Several mortar shells landed at the UN and African Union compounds in Mogadishu Sunday morning. The militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility.

Sources within the facility told HOL seven mortar shells landed at the expansive compounds which border Aden Adde Airport at about 6am local time.

There was no immediate information on possible casualties.

The attacks come close to two months after similar ones in early march which injured a foreign national in the same compound.

Al-Shabaab said through its affiliate media it had conducted the attacks.

The group has also fired such shells at Aden Adde Airport in the past disrupting business and causing damages.

AMISOM announced last month the suspension of construction works and movement with its base camp following the confirmation of COVID-19 cases within the UN compound.

““The implementation of these instructions will entail suspension of all construction work, movement of resupply vehicles and business activities within the Base Camp, such as shops at Marine, Movcon, Sector 1 main kitchen and car wash area,” AMISOM said in a statement.
