Security operation in Baidoa nabs dozens

Friday March 22, 2019

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali forces have arrested dozens of people on Thursday following a covert security operation in and around Baidoa, the administrative capital of Southwest state.

Reports indicate that the forces had been conducting door to door security operations for the last 24 hours.

According to witnesses, dozens of youth were detained during the operation and were taken to the police station for further investigation.

The officials leading the operation said it was meant to improve the security of the city.

Southwest state authorities have not yet commented on the operation which comes months after the regional state elected Abdiaziz Hussein Lafta-Garen as the leader of the state.

Baidoa lies 250km south of Mogadishu and has witnessed several deadly attacks in recent years.

Al-Qaeda linked  Al-Shabab controlled Baidoa between 2009 and 2012 before being driven out by Ethiopian-backed government forces. Al-Shabaab is fighting to topple the fragile internationally-backed Somali government in Mogadishu.
