The Media Association of Puntland [MAP] has condemned the torture and blackmail against Horseed Newspaper and its digital publishing arm.
Horseed is a popular daily newspaper in Puntland. MAP has written to the security forces in Puntland including the Puntland police boss with regards to harassment.
MAP has asked the security forces to investigate claims of abuse and torture by Mohamed Omar.
'The government and the security forces have the duty in line with the constitution to protect, respect, defend and uphold the fundamental rights and freedoms in the constitution including media rights and freedoms' . Faisal Khalif Barre, the chairperson of MAP said.
MAP said any party that is not pleased with what reporter reports should not take the law in their own hands but should settle the matter peacefully.
Mohamed Omar told Hiiraan Online reporters that last week he was attacked by businessman John Yardi Warsame who is the manager of Al-Baashit Construction Company.
"He threatened me that he would kill me. Then he punched me on the left side of my face. His friend who was in the same car with him returned him back into the car," Mohamed Omar said.
'20 minutes later Gaar Yassin Ahmed, the owner of Ilgar Construction Company who threatened to send youths who would put 7 bullets in my head'. He said.
Recently Horseed newspaper exposed the rot in the system of provision of contracts in Puntland.
Mohamed Omar calls for justice for him and called the government to uphold his personal freedoms.
