Ottawa: Stock up on personal safety tips during Crime Prevention Week

Wednesday October 28, 2015

Ottawa police constables Rebecca Vanderwater and Mahamud Elmi will be providing information to the public at several locations in Ottawa during Crime Prevention Week, Nov. 1 to 7, including in Billings Bridge, South Keys and Herongate.

In addition to serving and protecting, Ottawa police will deliver tips and insight to help everyone from schoolchildren to seniors stay safe.

Personal safety is the theme of this year's Crime Prevention Week, Nov. 1 to 7.

The event kicks off with a barbecue on Nov. 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the main lobby at police headquarters, at 474 Elgin St. Proceeds from the barbecue will go to the United Way Ottawa.

“Officers and volunteers will be focusing on increasing public awareness and decreasing susceptibility to crime whether at home, in your vehicle, when using public transit, at your workplace and in public spaces,” Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau said in a statement.

Police officers will be hosting several events across Ottawa to share their insight on crime prevention, proactive policing measures and campaigns, and safety topics tailor-made for community housing tenants, commercial business employees, schoolchildren and Girl Guides and Brownies.

Information on fraud, scams and Internet safety will be presented to seniors, and high school students will have the chance to learn about driving and personal safety.

Information tables, community meetings and lectures will be held across the city in Billings Bridge, Herongate, South Keys, Kanata, Nepean, Carlingwood, Somerset West, Old Ottawa East, ByWard Market, Vanier, Strathcona Heights, Cyrville and Orléans.

The awareness week will also feature Crime Prevention Ottawa's seventh annual Community Safety Awards on Nov. 2 at city hall.

The awards recognize and celebrate individuals, programs and groups that have made a difference in preventing crime and bolstering the safety of communities in the city.
