JOWHAR (HOL)—A Somali woman has drowned her stepdaughter to death at a water canal in southern Somalia after a prolonged marital dispute with her husband.
Residents in the agricultural town of Jowhar, 90km north of Mogadishu discovered the body of the two-years old floating over dirty waters on Sunday as local authorities later determined the cause of the girl’s death.
Dowlay Omar has reportedly taken the girl into the waterway, throwing her into the deep waters and left the scene.
According to the family’s neighbours, Mrs. Omar has earlier threatened the girl if her husband didn’t move her to her mother.
Mohamed Hussein has reportedly alerted local authorities that his daughter was missing, and noted his initial suspicions that his wife might have killed his daughter, referring the initial threats by his wife.
Stunned residents have later gathered at the family’s home as the body of girl lied on the corner, according to witnesses. The woman has reportedly been arrested by police in the town.
Such incidents are uncommon in a relatively peacfull city of Johwar which has a population who are largely farmers and livestock herders.
