Amavubi thrash Somalia to advance to CECAFA quarters

Rwanda secured a place in the quarterfinals of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup following a comfortable 3-0 win over Somalia at Hawassa Stadium on Friday.
Debutant Yussufu Habimana found the back of the net in the sixth minute to give Johnny McKinstry’s side an early lead before the in-form Jacques Tuyisenge doubled Rwanda’s lead in the 52nd minute for his third goal of the tournament.
Six minutes later, Hegman Ngomirakiza netted the third as Amavubi matched their highest scoreline in 2015, the other being a 3-1 win over Ethiopia in an international friendly game in September in Kigali.
McKinstry, who made nine changes to the side that lost to Tanzania on Tuesday, handed Habimana, Ivan Senyange and Fiston Munezero their debut starts for Amavubi and indeed their contribution towards the win impressed him.
He told supersport.com that, “Habimana is quite flexible in terms of his position and can play on the left and right as well as second striker in the center if needed. He also has good technique and is confident on the ball.”
The Northern Irishman was also impressed with teenage sensation Dominique Savio Nshuti who had two assists on Thursday, bringing his count to three at the regional tournament.
However, McKinstry will be hoping that Tuyisenge’s scoring form continues as he has now scored four goals in four games in all competitions.
This victory sent Rwanda to second in Group A tied with Tanzania on six points with the Taifa Stars set to play against the hosts Ethiopia in a must-win encounter for the latter who have amassed three points from two games, winning 2-0 against Somalia and losing 1-0 to Rwanda.
