The Somali man accused of being the main negotiator in the kidnapping of Canadian freelance journalist Amanda Lindhout appeared briefly in an Ottawa courtroom Friday by video from jail.
Ali Omar Ader wore orange coveralls and said little more than his name as his lawyer Samir Adam asked that his matter be put off another week so that he could receive disclosure — the evidence police have collected against his client — from federal prosecutors.
Ader will return to court via video from the jail on June 26.
Earlier this week, Adam told the Citizen Ader was intending to apply for legal aid to help fund his defence.
Adam said Ader’s case will proceed in English for now, although a Somali interpreter will be needed eventually.
Ader, 37, was arrested on June 11 in Ottawa. Details about when exactly he arrived in Ottawa, why he was here and who paid for his trip remain murky. His lawyer has told the Citizen that Ader wasn’t in the country long before his arrest.
Ader is facing one charge of hostage-taking. If found guilty, he could face a life sentence.
Following his arrest, the RCMP accused Ader of being “one of the main negotiators” for the Islamist group that seized Lindhout and Australian colleague Nigel Brennan in Somalia in August 2008.
Lindhout and Brennan were held for 15 months in often brutal captivity. Lindhout’s best-selling memoir, A House in the Sky, gave a vivid account of the physical and sexual violence she endured at the hands of her Somali militant captors. They were released in November 2009 after their families paid a ransom.
The RCMP confirmed the investigation that resulted in Ader’s arrest used undercover operations, surveillance and wiretaps, but said other details of the investigation “will only be disclosed during judicial proceedings.”
The RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team led the investigation.
