Unidentified ‘Device’ Found on White House Grounds

NEW DELHI — Some sort of unidentified device has been found on the grounds of the White House, but poses no threat to security, a spokesman for President Obama said on Monday.

Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, said he did not know whether the device was a drone, but he said that the Secret Service was investigating the matter.

Mr. Obama and the first lady, Michelle Obama, are on a three-day visit toIndia, but their daughters, Malia and Sasha, are in Washington. The report about the device on Monday came at a time of heightened concern about the security of the first family and their home.

The Secret Service has received heavy criticism for a number of recent security breaches, including an intruder climbing the White House fence last year and reaching the interior of the residence before being caught by agents.
