Djibouti's parliament speaker dies

MOGADISHU (HOL) -- Djibouti's speaker of parliament has died in the Djiboutian capital on Thursday, aged 70, Somali parliament speaker confirmed on Friday.

Mr. Ali who had been the President of the National Assembly of Djibouti since 2003 has died of unspecified illness, according Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari, Somalia's parliament speaker.

Born in Ali Sabieh in 1945, he held various important positions at the Air Djibouti. In 1985, he became the Deputy Director-General of the national carrier. He then served as Interim Director-General from 25
April 1986 to 1 March 1990 and was also the Director-General from 1 March 1990 to 31 January 1991.

After his political career, Mr. Ali who was often described by many as a 'charismatic' politician also served as the Secretary-General of the People's Rally for Progress (RPP) from 2003 to 2012.

According Djibouti media, the government is expected to announce three days mourning for the death of the long-served politician.
