Qatar Warns Against Food Security Deterioration In Somalia

GENEVA, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- Qatar has warned against the continued deterioration of food security in Somalia, and urged the international community to provide urgent support to meet its humanitarian needs in order to avoid the recurrence of famine that occurred in 2011.

According to Qatar News Agency (QNA) the warning was made in a speech delivered by Qatar's Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission in Geneva, Nour Ibrahim Al-Sada, during the 27th session of the Human Rights Council, as part of the Interactive Dialogue with the Independent Expert on the Situation of Human Rights in Somalia.

"After we see the report, we agree that the human rights situation in Somalia is very complex, as mentioned in the report, and has been affected significantly due to the ongoing conflict in the country for more than two decades," she said.

"We also support the Independent Expert remarks that the review and reform of the interim constitution and the continuation of the federal government's work, building of the state's institutions, are considered of the most important pillars to move forward towards achieving stability, reconciliation, development, promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms."

She stressed that Qatar condemned attacks against civilians in Somalia as well as violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, and urged for necessary investigations to ensure that those responsible would be brought befo could be grough and to bring them to justice.

The Second Secretary also urged the international community and the relevant bodies to coordinate efforts to provide assistance and capacity building to support and develop the Somali institutions in the field of human rights.
