Garissa, Kenya: A man was Thursday morning shot dead and three others were admitted in hospital following a gun attack by unknown people in Garissa Town. The victims were offloading sacks of potatoes at about 5 am when a gunman on a motorbike struck.

Police say the gunman opened fire killing one on the spot and injured the other three before speeding off. North Eastern regional police commander Patrick Lumumba said the motive of the attack is yet to be known.

“The injured victims are in hospital in a stable but serious condition but we are yet to know the motive of the attack. It could be business rivalry or other issues,” said Lumumba.

He added an assistant Chief in Mandera County was Wednesday evening injured when unknown people hurled a grenade at his house. Muhamed Ibrahim, the assistant chief for Mandera Township, was in company of her two year old daughter when the attackers struck at about 7 pm. Lumumba said the assistant chief was critically injured while her daughter sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Mandera district hospital for treatment.

He was first shot at before the attackers hurled the grenade, said Lumumba.

“The attackers seemed to have had their target in mind as the vehicle drove past the house before the occupants threw the grenade. We are investigating,” said Lumumba.

Witnesses said there was another shooting incident in Wajir Town on Wednesday night. This was during a bid by police to arrest suspected gunmen. The suspects managed to escape even as police shot to the air to scare them to stop. The region has been facing insecurity related incidents despite police efforts to contain the situation.

The most recent one was the clashes between the Garre and Degodia in Mandera County in which more than 50 people have been killed and tens others displaced.
