Reports from Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region indicate that al Shabaab militant group on Monday reportedly executed four men accused of spying for the federal government and its western allies in Barawe town.

The four, Mahad Hassan Isse, Hassan Haji Awow, Idle Mohamed Hassan and Ahmed Mohamed Aden aged between 18 and 27 were reportedly accused of spying on al Shabaab militant group’s activities in the region.

The four were executed by al Shabaab’s firing squad at an open ground in Barawe town where hundreds of people gathered to witness the execution.

Al Shabaab commander in Lower Shabelle region Mohamed Abu-Abdalla said the four facilitated operations against his group which led to their execution.

Reports from the region added that the suspects did not have fair trial and were not allowed to have lawyers.

Al Shabaab militant group lost several villages and small towns in south central Somalia over the last few months to the African Union forces and the Somali government troops in a joint military campaign.

The group’s leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane was also killed by a US drone attack early this month near Barawe town; one of the group’s strongholds in the country.
