Somaliland: A would-be nation state

In the eyes of the international community, Somaliland is an autonomous region in Somalia, on the Horn of Africa. But most of its 3.5 million inhabitants do not consider the territory – which has a president, a flag and even a currency – part of Somalia.
Since its self-declared independence in 1991, Somaliland is seen by many countries as an island of stability in a complex region and a solid partner in the fight against piracy and Al Shabaab Islamists.
