An unidentified assailant has shot and killed the court judge of Luuq district in the Gedo region.

Sheik Mahmoud Qoryooley was gunned down as he left the local mosque on his way to home after prayers on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses said that the attackers escaped after carrying out the murder.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the assassination, although local residents point the finger to the Doolow authorities who were blamed for the killing. They have not been available to comment on these allegations.

For the past weeks tensions have been mounting high in the region as Somali government forces and their Moderate Islamists allies and the Interim Jubba Administration militia battled several times for the control of the region.

On Wednesday the Independent National Reconciliation committee called for calm in the region and pleaded that all sides exercise restrain while trying to solve their differences through negotiations.
