Somali government has appointed the new chief of its recently-revived commandos forces who are expected to play a key role in the fight against Al-shabab, according to the Somali military chief of staff General Dahir Aden Elmi.

“I would like to tell the Somali people that a widespread military operations against Al Shabab terrorists will soon start across the country and the commandos troops will be part of such operation to free the country from terrorists” General Elmi told the media in Mogadishu on Thursday.

He said that the commandos unit has successfully ended their full training sessions and were armed with all necessary military equipment they needed. “The commandos will work harder to make Somalia free from terrorism” General Elmi noted.

Meanwhile, the chief of Somalia’s newly revived commandos unit Colonel Hassan Mohamed Yusuf said that his commandos were committed to continuing their struggle until they have confirmed the eradication of Al shabab from the country.

“I am telling the Somali people with a loud voice that they will soon hear a very good news from the battle fields—Al-shabab is now on the run and we will chase them away until the last one is killed or captured” Somalia’s new commandos unit chief Colonel Hassan Mohamed Yusuf told the media in Mogadishu on Thursday.

The appointment of the Commandos united leader comes a day after the United States donated armed vehicles and other military equipment to the commandos unit who have recently been revived after more than 23 years of absence.
