More than 11 people have been killed in a renewed fierce fighting between rival clan militias in the village of Deefow about 35 kilometres north of Beledweyne, the provincial capital of the central Somali region of Hiiraan.

According to residents in Deefow, the fighting erupted early on Tuesday morning when the village came under attack from one of the clan militias.

Sources indicate that dozens were also wounded in the fighting. About 18 people who sustained different injuries have been admitted to the general hospital in the city of Beledweyne.

At least 7 people whose injuries were very serious have been airlifted to the capital Mogadishu for medication.

The village fell into the hands one of the clan militias, while residents fled toward different directions to escape from the fighting. Negotiation efforts by local elders seem to have failed.

Ugas Abdirahman Ugas Khaliif recently called for calm and urged both clans to end their differences on the negotiation table, but his call was ignored.
