The Danish government has issued a formal request to to Somaliland authorities to hand over a citizen suspected of a murder on Danish soil.

Omar Hasan, 29, is the prime suspect in the 2012 murder of Jonas Thomsen Sekyere, a 21-year-old law student. Sekyere was fatally stabbed at a popular nightclub, Bakken, in the meatpacking district, Kødbyen.

After committing the crime, Hasan fled the county and returned to his home in Somaliland, a self-declared independent state that is internationally recognised as an autonomous region of its neighbour Somalia.

Not so fast
“In mid-May 2013, we contacted the authorities in Somaliland, as our investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly stayed there," a deputy police inspector, Jens Møller Jensen, said in a press release.

"We have since been in constant dialogue with the authorities in Somaliland.”

Though there has been an international arrest warrant for Hasan since 2012, he wasn’t arrested in Somaliland until last month.

The Danish authorities are now working on an extradition trial, so they can bring Hasan to justice in a Danish court.
