MOGADISHU – An official with a Mogadishu university was shot dead in the Somali capital on Wednesday by unidentified militants, eyewitnesses said.
Ibrahim Hamed, deputy head of Simad University, was driving his car in Hodan district when unidentified militants intercepted him and opened fire on his vehicle, killing him instantly, the sources said.
The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting, before security authorities arrived for investigation, they added.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Somalia has remained in the grip of on-again, off-again violence since the outbreak of civil war in 1991.
This year, the country appeared to inch closer to stability after government troops and African Union forces – deployed in the country since 2007 – drove the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group from most of its strongholds.
