Mombasa, Kenya: Police have said the four gunmen who shot at the Mombasa urban DCIO Ndumba Thangarani were Al-Shabaab militants.

Assistant County Commander Sevilino Kubai said the four, who are Kenyans, had been on the police radar for a while after returning from Somalia where they had been training.

Mr Kubai said the suspects were linked to a series of terrorist activities in Coast region and were planning fresh attacks.

"The four suspects were linked to the shooting of two foreigners (a German and a Russian) in Old Town in Mombasa County," said Kubai.

Kubai said Mr Tharangani and Mombasa police boss Geoffrey Mayek had trailed the four suspects to Tudor before they opened fire on them.

"The officers had been trailing the suspects from Makupa Prison near railway station and were about to ambush them," said Kubai.

Kubai however said that the four gunmen were not the same ones who had been terrorising Mombasa residents.
