Mandera, Kenya: The death toll from the inter-clan fighting in Mandera rose to six on Monday with dozens of families trapped inside their houses and essential commodities running out.

All business premises remained closed since Thursday, as clan militia took over Rhamu town, Mandera County in North-Eastern region.

According to the local county commissioner Alex Ole Nkoyo clan militia from two pastoralist communities, who has been engaging in a deadly inter-clan fighting since last general election in 2013 over political disputes has led to systematic arming of clan militia.

“The two communities and their leadership are not committed neither honest in the peace process we have been pushed for the last one year. Communities are fully arming themselves for a fully-fledged bloodletting that has culminated into Rhamu town turning into a battlefield for the last three days,” Ole Nkoyo told The Standard.
