Kenya: Uhuru Pays Tribute to Officers Killed in Pangani Explosion

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said many lives would have been lost yesterday if it were not for the diligence of two officers who were killed during a car explosion outside the Pangani Police station yesterday.

The two were among four people who died when a car they were escorting to the Pangani Police station was blown up last night.

Speaking during a pass out ceremony for GSU officers today, President Kenyatta thanked the two officers and other officers who have lost their lives while protecting Kenyans.

The President reiterated his government's commitment to providing the police force with the necessary tools to enforce the law while also providing for the officers welfare.

He said the government is committed to fighting crime "in whatever form it may take."

The President sought to assure Kenyans that the war against crime is not a war against any community or religion saying that the war is against criminals who seek to harm other Kenyans and those who seek to terrorise and cause fear amongst kenyans.

He further thanked members of the public who have provided information to the police leading to arrest of criminals as well as those who have surrendered weapons stating that they will not be arrested but rehabilitated to ensure that they become "productive rather than destructive members of society."

He said his government is working to ensure youth have jobs so as to improve their lives and ensure they avoid criminal activities.

President Kenyatta also told officers graduating during the ceremony that they "graduate with the full authority to enforce but also obey the law."

He further asked the officers to respect Kenyans while carrying out the duties so that they may work with curbing criminal activities.
