Attacks on the United Nations

The United Nations, which said Friday at least 58 people were killed in an attack against one of its bases in South Sudan, has been the target of several attacks in the past decade.

Here are some of the worst assaults:

- April 18, 2014: SOUTH SUDAN - At least 58 people are killed and more than 100 others wounded in an attack against one of the UN's bases in South Sudan sheltering thousands of civilians.

- June 19, 2013: SOMALIA - Eighteen people, including eight UN workers, are killed when Al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents shoot and blast their way into the United Nations compound in Mogadishu.

- August 26, 2011: NIGERIA - A suicide bomb blast rocks the UN compound in the capital Abuja, killing 26.

- October 28, 2009: AFGHANISTAN - The Taliban kill six foreign workers in an attack on a UN hostel in Kabul. On April 1, 2011, also in AFGHANISTAN seven UN staff are killed by a mob in protests involving more than 2,000 protesters against a Koran burning in the United States.

- December 11, 2007: ALGERIA - Eighteen UN staff members are killed when a car bomb destroys the offices of the UN Development Programme and damages those of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Algiers.

- August 19, 2003: IRAQ - The UN's special representative in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and 21 other people die in a massive suicide bomb attack on the world body's Baghdad offices.
