At least 20 civilians have been killed while scores more were injured in a deadly car accident outside the Somali capital Mogadishu late on Tuesday.

The accident occurred when a lorry travelling from southern regions collided with a mini bus in the kilometre 13 area along the road linking between Mogadishu and Afgoye district in the Lower Shabelle region.

Eye witnessed told local media that the accident was one of the worst fatal incidents they witnessed in their lives. “I saw dead men and women lying on the ground while severely wounded others were screaming for help” one witness said.

At least 25 people who were wounded in the accident were rushed to Madina hospital in Mogadishu where they are currently being treated. Some of them suffered from serious injuries.

Medical sources said that Tuesday’s accident was the deadliest to be reported from the region in recent years.

Most drivers in Somalia have no more experience for driving, whilst roads linking between regions in the country were not repaired since late 1980s.

The two combined reasons are attributed to the increasing fatal accidents in Somalia.
