SUVA, April 11 (Bernama) -- Fiji and Somalia established diplomatic relations on Friday, China's Xinhua news agency quoted an announcement from the Fijian government.

Peter Thomson, Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations and Somali counterpart Elmi Ahmed Duale signed a joint communique in this regard at the Fiji Mission to the UN in New York.

The communique expresses the desire of both governments to promote and strengthen ties and cooperation in political, economic, cultural, humanitarian and other fields.

Diplomatic relations will be guided by the objectives and purposes of the UN Charter and international law, particularly on equality among states, territorial integrity, respect for national sovereignty and international treaties, among others.

Duale thanked Fiji for the leadership provided to the Group of 77 in 2013 and said his country looks forward to continuing to work with Fiji in forwarding the interests of developing countries.

Fiji has been expanding its diplomatic ties since the Look North policy came into effect.
