Puntland forms special committee to probe the murder of UN officials in Galkayo

Galkayo (HOL) - The president of the semiautonomous Somali regional state of Puntland Abdi Weli Mohamed Ali Gaas has formed a special committee to probe the killing of two United Nations advisors who were shot dead at the airport of Galkayo on Monday.

The slain officials were working for the United Nations office on Drugs and Crime and were killed inside the airport by one of Puntland’s security forces.

Top Puntland government officials were said to be at the airport when the killing took place.

President Gaas said that the special committee will conduct deep investigations in the killing of the UN officials to try to find out the main reasons behind such brutal assassination which occurred at one of the government’s heavily guarded sites.

“Such incident is new to Puntland, it was an outrageous act and we are really very sorry for what happened here at Galkayo airport yesterday” president Abdi Weli Gaas told the media at the scene of the barbaric murder on Tuesday.

The regional leader said he was very hopeful that the strong committee which composed of government ministers and as well as the intelligence services and police chives will be able to figure out the exact reasons for the killing and who was behind it.
