Mogadishu (HOL) - The United Nations is mourning for the death of two consultants working for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime who have been shot dead on Monday at the airport of Galkayo city which is about 750 kilometres north of the capital Mogadishu.

The brutal killing was allegedly carried out by one of the airport guards belonging to the semiautonomous Somali regional state of Puntland.

The killing took place inside the airport according to eye witnesses.

The United Nations special representative to Somalia Nicholas Kay has strongly condemned the brutal killing against the UN drug and Crime officers.

“I am denouncing such brutal killing in my strongest terms possible---the slain officials were in Galkayo to help the Somali people” UN representative said in his reaction to the killing.

Mr. Kay said that the world body will investigate the matter to find out who was exactly behind the killing of the UN staffers.

“The United Nations is committed to continuing its efforts to help the Somali people—such assassination will not deter us from accomplishing our humanitarian operations in the country” Nicholas kay noted.

However, the regional government of Puntland was not yet available for comment. Monday’s killing comes as the Puntland president Abdiweli Mohamed Gaas was in the city.
