Somali government forces backed by Ethiopian
troops clashed with al-Shabaab fighters in the Koronbod area of Bay
region Saturday (August 31st), leaving at least seven dead and scores
wounded, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.
The allied troops took control of al-Shabaab bases in the area after
launching an attack on the militants late Saturday evening, Qansaxdhere
District Commissioner Aden Ali Qoqone said.
Among the dead are at least five civilians, Somalia's Garowe Online reported.
Al-Shabaab claimed via Twitter that its fighters ambushed the
Ethiopian convoy, killing nine Ethiopian soldiers and injuring more than
20. The militant group also said it raided Ethiopian bases in El Barde.
Somali and African Union Mission in Somalia troops also fought with
al-Shabaab in the Yaqbarweyne village of Lower Shabelle, according to
Somalia's Shabelle Media Network.
