A brand-new U17 boys Somali tournament soccer team will be holding a fundraiser on Saturday to raise money so it can compete in the Schwan’s USA Cup in Blaine on July 12-14.
The team, called the Faribault Eagles, will be holding a car wash at Trinity Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Car washes are $5. The team was formed by coach Terry Gersemehl and Kahda Mohamed and will play in three tournaments leading up to the USA Cup.
“It’s been a concerted effort of many in the community to pull this together,” Gersemehl said.
The team, which has 20 kids between ages 13 and 17, is entirely self-funded and has received a diversity grant from the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association and reduced fees from the Faribault Soccer Association.
For more information about the team or the car wash, contact Gersemehl at (507) 301-4681.
