A suspected terrorist was arrested by police
in Malaba at the weekend and transferred to Eldoret for interrogation.
Alex Wamuthoni who is also know as Salim Mustafa is believed to be a
member of al Shabaab.
Police sources could however not reveal where and how Wamuthoni, a
Kenyan national, was arrested before he was remanded at Malaba police
station.
It is believed the suspect had been on police radar for a couple of
months before the anti-terrorist police nabbed him. The arrest of the
terror suspect came a few days after a new global report on terror by
the United States of America showed Kenya has been successfully fighting
terrorism.
The report hailed the passage of the anti-terrorism act which it said
had helped the country deal effectively with the vice. Kenya has been a
target of attacks by militia groups following the country's invasion of
Somalia in 2009 in pursuit of al shabaab militants who alleged to have
kidnapped several foreign tourists and aid workers inside Kenya.
The out-going Teso police boss Elphas Korir confirmed the arrest and
transfer of the suspect to Eldoret to ascertain from records whether he
is a member of the terror gang.
Korir said the man was arrested at the border town by the
anti-terrorist police unit. Meanwhile, Busia acting deputy county
commissioner John Koech said that about 175 suspects have been arraigned
in court since May 1 attacks.
Speaking in Busia town, Koech attributed the arrest to effective
patrols and co-operation from wananchi in revealing the suspects.
