Officials in the administrative capital of Hiiraan region, Beledweyne say three young men have surrendered to government forces after they deserted from the ranks of islamist militants.
Displaying the defectors, the chief of Beledweyne police station Ali Dhuh Abdi addressed the media.
“These three young men have decided to defect from Alshabab and join the peace process” he said.
Ali Dhuh pledged a better treatment to those who defect from Alshabab calling all the fighters to lay down their arms.
One of the defectors who spoke to the media was reportedly quoted as saying that they decided to leave Al-Shabaab.
“I was in the ranks of alshabab for nine months and I fought in many battle fields” he said.
Government officials in Hiiraan have on several occasions displayed alshabab defectors saying it will weaken the extremist group.
