The
Speaker of Somalia’s
Federal
Parliament Professor Mohamed Osman Jawari has stated that legislators
will gather at the People’s Hall on Wednesday to endorse or not to
endorse the newly appointed Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed.
Prof Jawari made the announcement following the 24th meeting by the leadership of the parliament at the hall on Monday.
“Somali President (Hassan Sheikh
Mohamoud) accepted to come to the parliament together with the new
premier on 18th of December so that the legislators will have a chance
to evaluate the new PM,” stated Speaker Jawari.
President
Mohamoud appointed Mr Ahmed as the new head of the government to
replace Mr Abdi Farah Shirdon whose cabinet lost vote of parliamentary
confidence on 2nd of December.
New PM Ahmed was
appointed on 12th of December. According to Somalia’s provisional
constitution, the president is to officially introduce his choice of
prime minister to the parliament.
The legislators will evaluate the PM’s credentials and policy outlines before voting whether to endorse or not.
If
approved by the parliament, Mr Ahmed will form his Cabinet and seek
further approval from the parliament for the cabinet members and
government policies.
According to the Speaker, the
parliamentary on diverse topics including assessment of the parliament’s
operational plan for 2014 and the planning of the parliamentary
activities during the remaining sessions of the ongoing 3rd Assembly of
the legislature.
