Somalia's first Reconstruction and Investment Conference to open in Nairobi
Sunday, April 28, 2013
As Somalia looks to build a secure and prosperous future, the first Somali Reconstruction and Investment Conference and Exhibition (SORIC), will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on 28-29 May 2013 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
This ground breaking event will be the first of its kind to bring together key policy makers from the Government of Somalia and Somaliland, top decision makers from international and regional development organizations, and participants from the public and private sector. It is the only event of its kind fully endorsed by the Federal Government of Somalia and supported by the Ministry of Trade, the Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce.
A new era has dawned on Somalia and the country is embarking on a dynamic path of political and economic renewal after long-running civil strife and political turmoil. After 22 years of civil war that ravaged the country, peace is finally returning.
There are encouraging signs of progress and hope. The Somali government has been recognized by the United States of America, Great Britain, the European Union, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, the African Union, World Bank and IMF. The diaspora is returning home. The federal government and government of Somaliland are cooperating and engaging each other, registration of political parties has started in puntland, and normalcy is finally returning.
This change in fortunes calls for a paradigm shift in how investors and the international community approach Somalia. Almost all sectors and industries need rebuilding from scratch, presenting limitless opportunities for genuine and meaningful investment that benefits the Somali people.
“We wish to officially endorse and recognize the importance of this event which will provide a platform for meeting with potential organizations who will be interested in assisting our beloved country in its crucial stage of reconstruction and investment.” H.E Hon. Mohamud Ahmed Hassan, Minister of Commerce & Industry, Federal Government of Somalia.
“It is a time for reconstruction with new businesses and opportunities on the horizon. It is a new reality and one which will undoubtedly bring together all of us, from public and private sector in a new direction for rebuilding our country.” Mr. Mohamud Gabayre, President of the Somali Chamber of Commerce
“It is time to look at the reconstruction and investment of the country. This is a genuine case for a better future for our people.” Dr. Mohamud Jama, Somaliland representative in Kenya.
“We believe that a spectrum of business-oriented models, from social entrepreneurship ventures to private sector investment, will play a critical role in Somalia's economic growth. In fact, we are already seeing ample evidence of the potential of business in Somalia. I have seen it with my own eyes in my recent visit and the country is set for a new direction.” James N. Mureu Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman, Mombasa County.
“It’s now or never. This is the time for meaningful reconstruction and genuine investments in the immense opportunities in Somalia. The conference will present a new frontier in bettering the lives of the Somali people.” Mr Hassan Noor, CEO of Hanvard Africa, the organizer of the event.
