DETROIT (UPI) -- A Somali man was arrested trying to take a taxi from Windsor, Canada, to Detroit and charged with aggravated identity theft and misuse of a visa, police said.

Red flags were raised Sunday when the man told U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers he was taking a taxi because he had too many drunken-driving convictions and was unable to operate a motor vehicle, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The man said he was returning from a casino, but he showed officers a valid U.S. permanent resident card showing his residence was in Ohio. Unable to explain how he would return to Ohio, the man was selected for further inspection, and officers discovered he was Hassan Nur, a 52-year-old Somali citizen who had asylum status in the United States.

Documents filed in U.S. District Court indicate he stole the residency card from his brother-in-law, the newspaper said.

If convicted, Nur could face up to 10 years in prison.
