A report to the effect that two most wanted terrorism operatives are in Kenya is disquieting, and Kenyans need an assurance from the government that they will be swiftly apprehended and neutralised.

If, indeed, people with links to al-Qaeda terror group are roaming around in our cities, presumably casing targets before unleashing deadly attacks we need to do something urgently.

We must never forget that we are at war and therefore vulnerable to reprisal attacks by al-Shabaab terrorists, which means we cannot possibly let down our guard.

But the intelligence report raises a number of questions. How, in the first place, did these suspects enter Kenya and why were they not stopped? Who are their contacts here?

Our security forces must devise a Plan B should the terror attack materialise, which should involve hot pursuit and hitting the terrorists where it will hurt most – wrenching Kismayu and nearby towns from al-Shabaab control.

The organisation still controls vast swathes of Somalia and only dislodging it from its bases will do the trick. The softly, softly approach cannot possibly work to neutralise urban terrorists.
