Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says his government is giving $5 million in emergency relief to Somalia as parts of the country suffer from famine.
Chavez has announced the aid while undergoing cancer treatment in Cuba.
He says the $5 million in aid will go to "buy food quickly."
Chavez made the announcement Friday in a telephone call broadcast on state television. He said Venezuela also plans to send food supplies by airplane.
Chavez says Venezuela will also participate in other projects being coordinated by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
