The Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia, Mohamed Abdulahi “Farmajo”, on Tuesday condemned the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), saying it failed to reach the people hit by droughts in southern Somalia, APA learns at a press conference in Mogadishu.

“I fully condemn WFP because it failed to support people in Somalia,” PM Mohamed Abdulahi “Farmajo” told reporters.

“This is the exact time to support the people in Somalia,” he added.

The Horn of Africa nation is without a functioning central government since 1991.

It has since been torn apart by decades of conflict and factional strife and is already facing a dire humanitarian crisis in which 3.2 million people, more than 40 per cent of the population, are in need of aid.

WFP was recently targeting some 2.5 million people for food aid across Somalia, although 625,000 of those are in areas where operations are currently suspended due to pressure from Al-Shabaab Islamist militants in the south.

In 2009, WFP reached 3.3 million people in Somalia with food supplies.
