Somali Cab Driver Beaten In Attack Dies After Police Make 2 Arrests

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Somali cab driver who was brutally assaulted earlier this week in the city's Beltzhoover section has died, according to the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh.

The news of the man's death comes just hours after police announced two arrests in the case.

The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh released a statement Friday night confirming the death of the 31-year-old man. They say he leaves behind a wife who is pregnant and a young son.

The statement, issued by the center's executive director, reads in full:

"Tonight we mourn the passing of our brother, Ramadhan Mohamed. He was killed after being violently beaten earlier this week in Beltzhoover. He was just 31-years-old and leaves behind his wife, Khadija Mohamed, with a baby on the way, and a 2-year-old son. Ramadhan was kind and easy going. Dedicated to his faith and to service, he volunteered every weekend teaching youth. We urge the police to keep the pressure on until all of the facts are in. We need to know what really happened that night that left our brother beaten to death. We must not rule out the possibility of a hate crime until a full investigation is completed."

However, investigators said there is no evidence that the robbery or beating were motivated by the driver's nationality. Still, police said the FBI has been notified.

Earlier on Friday, police arrested two people in connection with the case.

According to the investigation, King Edwards and Hosea Moore, both 20-year-olds from Beltzhoover, called the cab on the morning of Feb. 21 with the intent of robbing the driver.
