Sarah Hanson-Young: asylum policy is designed to break people – video

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young says she is ‘disgusted’ with the federal government’s reaction to the latest self-harm incident on Nauru. On Tuesday a 21-year-old Somali woman was being treated for critical injuries in a Brisbane hospital after she set herself alight on Nauru. The Greens say government policy is designed to push people to a point where they give up. Hanson-Young was responding to comments from the immigration minister, Peter Dutton, in which he blamed refugee advocates for allegedly encouraging detainees on Nauru and Manus to self-harm in the hope of getting to Australia.
