Two decades of Ethiopia's carefully crafted policy towards Somalia was destroyed in a single day.

I was reading a pie-ce about Somalia's relationship with its neighbours and it just about sums up my thinking on the issue.

After what happened on 8th February 2017, Ethiopia's only leverage is regional administrations but their leaders were already standing on a quicksand even before the day which will live long in Somali history.

Regional leaders are acting differently towards the new president and are more supportive than they've ever been.

In fact, regional leaders were acting differently before the election.

Ethiopia's interference, in particular its support for the previous president, was very blatant and many politicians, many of them from the Darood clan, made some angry remarks about it.

One might say that Ethiopia might have burnt its bridges with Darood politicians.

In hindsight, it was a tactical error on Ethiopia's part to be so overt about who it wanted to win.

The fact that the winner of the presidential contest was not only Darood but also the candidate they feared the most just compounded Ethiopia's loss.

One reading of the situation is that Ethiopia can no longer use the regional leaders as a leverage because its burnt its bridges with Darood politicians, and that the president is himself Darood will makes it less likely that he will face opposition from regional leaders.

There might not be a united support among regional leaders of the new president, but Madoobe and Jubbaland seem very supportive and that matters because it will mean Puntland cannot act alone.

None of the regional leaders will be able to take on Farmaajo because he has unanimous support from the public.

Simply put, Farmaajo is more popular than they are in their own regions.

This hasn't happen in recent Somali politics, where we have a national leader who has the support of almost all Somalis.

The public will be looking for very close for signs of any attempts to undermine Farmaajo.

We will be watching very closely for any attempt to conspire with foreign entities against Farmaajo.

The fact that Farmaajo has huge support doesn't mean he should go looking for confrontation with regional leaders, he has to do the complete opposite, actually.

President has to govern smartly and justly.

He knows this is a big opportunity to do away with Ethiopia and Kenyan interefernce in Somalia and their hopes of hegemony forever.

President Farmaajo will now be able to implement the proper federalism that Somalia needs.

I thought Jubbaland was key and Madoobe seems very keeen to work with president and the rest of the regonal administration will fall into line.

To all the regional leaders: You don't need Ethiopia or Kenya. Work with president Farmaajo and you'll prosper.

But if choose to work against him and Somalia and work with our enemies, then watch where you'll end up.

It's a choice between Somalia led the people's president or our enemies.
