@ 1/28/2015 5:47 PM EST  You must login first..     @ 1/28/2015 5:25 PM EST  You must login first..     Fatuma S.Ali @ 12/17/2014 4:21 AM EST  Thanks to Hodan for an important and needed article.As psychiatric professional myself I have the same experience as Hodan in the somali community in Denmark.Mental health problems are taboo and somalis do not use the psychiatric facilities in the country.They are afraid of being discriminated by the danish professionals and are also afraid of the stigma in the somali community.The families send their mentally ill members back to Somalia and to extremely bad situations.While working as psychiatrist in Burco I met some mentally ill somalis both from Denmark and UK.In Denmark we have a new association of somali health professionals trying to make a difference for the somali community by organizing informative meetings in somali.These meetings are well attended.I think that the way forward is that we as somali professionals take the responsability for our communities by informing as much as possible about the existing facilities in our new countries .
