 Well writen article,mashaallah.

Khat is nothing but a drug, we could go round claiming its not but it is.Where else do you see a bunck of men/women chew green leaves for hours, willingly to let down their families for just the sake of a stimulant.I wish it was banned everywhere, the sad thing its the women too chewing Khaad, who is to raise these kids!!
At least when the man was an addict the kids had their mothers to raise them , now its the norm for women too to meet and chew...
are we always in a self destructive mode?

Banning Khat is one of the grat things uic did for Somalis.
This a drug and, that is what the research proved.
As for the British, they like the sleeping dog to ly otherwise it will wake up to the reality of Al Islam.

Said, well done on this article as always! I posted a long comment, but somehow it disappeared. 

Kat is addictive and has negative impacts, on economically and socially. Kat creates family destructions more effectively than any other things we know. You sleep while the rest are working and you spend money on worthless green leaf

Sadly today many women chew Khat than a decade ago and my friend Said and I are witness to that. I just wonder why spend money, energy and quality time with just a “GREEN LEAF” I guess it is beyond my imaginations.

Bless.

Yes Abdik, I agree with you that khad has destroyed many families. It's about time that people took action on this matter.

and to my brother said, well written Article.

Get it. Just don't sleep on that, meaning that thought in your mind for I don't think reer waqooyi will ever volunterily ban Khat.

It is not court like those used to settle for legal matters. It is in their court Abdik!
"the ball is back on their court" (an area marked for ball games such as tennis)
I am sure you know what it means. Ideomatically when I used it in such sentence.
I wanted to say since Khat is banned in the south it is northerners turn to stop it
or face its health and economical impact.

Years from now when we old men and women from Somalia sit around, not chewing Khat mind you, and ask ourselves if the former so called Islamic Courts did any good I am very sure stopping Khat will be on top of our list.

And wiliq what is "WAQOOYI court?" Is there such a thing out there?

Khat is useless plant, its disadvantages overweights any social meeting and euphoria that last few hours and disappears next day. One main disadvantage of khat is the amount of time wasted when consuming. It makes its client lazy and helpless. It’s real health consequences are not yet fully known as no one carried out any reliable research on it.
The financial impact of khat on Somalia was ominous. Ironically, Somalia unlike other East African consumers has no significant farming of khat, it was open market competed by neighbour khat farmers, mainly Kenya and Ethiopia. The good news is the IUC banned it most of south Somalia for the right time because Somalis are more matured than 1980’s when M Siyad prematurely banned it. The ball is on REER WAQOOYI court now, ban it or perish for its economical disadvantages and countless health problems.

Khat is a dangerous drug. I know it does not look that way when you see happy men sitting around having a ball while chewing these leaves but consider how many famalies this drug have destroyed over the years, one at a time.

we should discourage our people from using it and when necessary we should definitely lobby to stop those Khat dealers, who should be refer to as drug dealers, from bringing this poison into our communities.
